Below are some of my favorite Halloween-related movies, books, and whatever else reminds me of the coolest holiday.

Movies

The Worst Witch: A ridiculous movie with no redeeming value featuring a fresh-faced Fairuza Balk, a two-faced Charlotte Rae (of The Facts of Life fame), and possibly the cheesiest video of Tim Curry ever committed to celluloid. But I have to love it because it was a childhood treat every Halloween afternoon before Trick-or-Treating.

Hocus Pocus: It’s an unfortunate fact that when you cross anything supernatural with television or video, you generally come up with dorkiness. But with a cast like Bette Midler, Cathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the triple threat Sanderson Sisters, it’s a cheesefest you’ll really enjoy!

Harry Potter series: Books or movies, these are among my top five ultimate favorites. They’re everything I wanted The Worst Witch to be when I was a kid, and more.

Interview With the Vampire: One of the best movies ever made. Enough said.

Queen of the Damned: Falls dramatically short of its predecessor and the books Anne Rice penned, but the music rocks and the movie will put you in that dark Halloween mood. If you can disregard the flagrant and frequent violations of canon, that is.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Time Warp, transvestites and cannibalism, oh my! A Halloween staple that never goes out of style.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Another one of the best movies ever made. A departure from Bram Stoker’s vision at times, but in such a very good way.

Nightmare on Elm Street/Halloween/Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Friday the 13th/ series: For obvious reasons.

The Monster Squad: Another childhood favorite. A group of kids calling themselves the Monster Squad battle infamous silver screen monsters to get to the ringmaster of them all – Dracula. Let’s hope they can find a virgin who speaks German.

Halloweentown: Disney cheesefest you can’t help but love. Watch for Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie, and Debbie Reynolds as Aggie, the matron of the Cromwell Witch line.

The Haunting: It freaks me out.

Sleepy Hollow/The Nightmare Before Christmas/The Corpse Bride: The Tim Burton Trifecta. The man is brilliant and the movies speak for themselves. Nothing gets me in the spirit faster than these movies.
